COVID-19 Pandemic: Different Countries, Different Approaches

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to the world. After the outbreak of COVID-19, countries around the world have adopted different approaches to contain the virus according to their local context. Some nations have effectively curbed further widespread infection and taken measures to ensure a safe return to daily life. Nationally and provincially, Canada has adopted various approaches to control the spread of COVID-19, including training more people to expand contracting efforts, encouraging the public to download voluntary COVID-19 exposure notification app, enforcing regional lockdowns, travel restrictions and mandating population-wide use of masks. The interprovincial variation in Canada has demonstrated the unique vulnerabilities of each province to COVID-19 and has provided lessons for future health security challenges.

Knowledge sharing on the approaches in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic among various countries is critical to ensure effective response and swift recovery from the crisis. To this end, OPHA is pleased to organize this webinar in collaboration with Dr. Alireza Khatami, who brings a PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health from Umeå University to facilitate an international analysis and comparison of Canada’s containment efforts to other countries.

About the speaker:

Dr. Alireza Khatami is a medical doctor and board certified dermatologist (Iran), with a PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health (Sweden). As a full-time academic consultant dermatologist and dermato-epidemiologist, for 15+ years, he was extensively involved in teaching and conducting biomedical research projects, and authored/co-authored 50+ peer-reviewed publications and a dozen of book chapters and books. He has peer-reviewed 200+ manuscripts for 18 journals. He has also served as a member on a number of peer-reviewed journals’ Editorial Boards. He was Managing Editor and later the Deputy Editor of the Iranian Journal of Dermatology, and Dermatology and Cosmetics; two main peer-reviewed journals in the field of dermatology in Iran, and handled 2000+ submitted manuscripts over a total of 10 years. He also designed, instructed and facilitated dozens of workshops on scientific writing, peer reviewing, and publication ethics. An avid proponent of ethics in general and publication ethics in particular, he helped both journals to join the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Dr. Khatami received the Iranian Society of Dermatology Scientific Award for his outstanding contributions to the Iranian Journal of Dermatology in 2017.
