PHO Rounds: COVID–19 Mass Immunization Drive-Through: A Pilot

To meet community immunization needs, a flexible hybrid model for vaccine administration has been proposed by York Region Public Health. Addressing the timeliness, efficiency and safety of York Region residents, this model is comprised of: multiple fixed clinic sites varying in size, drive-through clinics, and mobile clinics, coupled with an “outreach immunization program” for congregate settings. A number of clinics have piloted the flu vaccine in a similar way to ensure operational readiness. The learnings from the immunization drive-through clinic suggest that a mass immunization drive-through for the COVID-19 vaccine can provide significant benefits and will likely be a compliment to a larger immunization strategy.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the steps required to plan and implement a mass immunization drive-through clinic
  2. Identify the benefits and challenges of implementing a mass immunization drive-through clinic given the COVID-19 context
  3. Summarize the feasibility/suitability factors to be considered when executing an immunization drive-through in various settings
