PHO Rounds: COVID-19 Vaccine Program Surveillance - Part Two: Monitoring Vaccine Impact and Surveillance for Special Populations

This is the second session of a two-part series on COVID-19 vaccine program surveillance. 

This session will focus on surveillance activities to understand the impact of the vaccine program. It will include an overview of breakthrough cases, estimates of vaccine effectiveness and an outline of the plans to monitor the effectiveness and the safety of COVID-19 vaccines during pregnancy.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe what is known about breakthrough cases of COVID-19 among vaccinated indivduals in Ontario 
  2. Identify early estimates of vaccine effectiveness from Ontario 
  3. Discuss the plans in place in Ontario to monitor both the safety and the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines given in pregnancy

Presenter(s): Leigh Hobbs, Jeff Kwong and Deshayne Fell

Leigh Hobbs is an Epidemiologist Lead and a member of the COVID-19 vaccine section of Public Health Ontario’s Incident Management System (IMS) structure for its pandemic response. 

Jeff Kwong is a Program Leader at ICES, Scientist at Public Health Ontario, Family Physician at Toronto Western Family Health Team, Interim Director at the Centre for Vaccine Preventable Diseases and a Professor in the Department of Family & Community Medicine and Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto.  

Deshayne Fell is an Associate Professor in the School of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Ottawa, a Scientist in the Children’s Hopsital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute and an Adjunct Scientist at ICES. Her research program focuses on vaccination during pregnancy.

College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) Affiliate Members may count RCPSC credits toward their Mainpro+ credit requirements. All other CFPC members may claim up to 50 Certified credits per cycle for participation in RCPSC MOC Section 1 accredited activities.

PHO Rounds are also approved by the Council of Professional Experience for professional development hours (PDHs) for members of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).
