PHO Rounds: It’s Not Just COVID-19 Anymore: The update on Influenza for the 2021-22 Season

Planning is underway for the upcoming 2021-22 respiratory virus season in Ontario.  Although there was almost no influenza or other non-COVID-19 respiratory viruses circulating in the 2020-21 season due to pandemic restrictions, there is already evidence of the resurgence of these viruses with the lifting of pandemic measures in various jurisdictions. This rounds session will include the following topics:

  • A summary of the epidemiology of non-SARS-CoV-2 respiratory viruses currently circulating in Canada and internationally;
  • An overview of influenza vaccines available under Ontario’s Universal Influenza Immunization Program (UIIP) for the 2021-22 season;
  • An update regarding the use of antiviral medications for influenza treatment and prevention;
  • An update regarding influenza and other respiratory virus laboratory testing conducted at the Public Health Ontario Laboratory.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe trends in influenza and respiratory activity observed following reopening phases of the pandemic in Ontario, Canada and internationally
  • Recognize influenza vaccine products available as part of Ontario’s Universal Influenza Immunization Program 2021-22
  • Understand the use and benefits of antiviral medications for the treatment and prevention of influenza
  • Understand influenza and other respiratory virus laboratory testing conducted for the 2021-22 season
