Webinar: Resilience in Children & Families: The Brain Story in Action for Policymakers and Practitioners

The Alberta Family Wellness Initiative (AFWI), a program of the Palix Foundation, mobilizes and connects synthesized scientific research about early brain and child development (the Brain Story) to better understand and address how inter-generational factors and experiences impact the lives of children as they grow and develop, focusing particularly on mental health and addiction. Since its inception, AFWI has engaged with a multitude of change agents and leaders in the health, human services, justice, education, academia, and community sectors to share and apply the brain story knowledge to improve policy and practice for the benefit of children and families. This session’s goal is to bring awareness to improve brain wellness for children and families.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how brains develop and how social interactions shape development
  • Describe the effects of stress on brain development and the impact of adverse childhood experiences on physical and mental health outcomes, including addiction
  • Identify evidence-based approaches for children in the prevention, intervention and treatment of childhood adversity
  • Describe the basic neurobiology of both substance and process addiction
