Join us as we start to explore what it will take for Canada to translate this commitment into on-the-ground transformation

About this event

Canada signed onto the WHO’s #COP26 Health Programme, thus formally committing to climate resilient and low carbon, sustainable health systems. Now what?

Speakers Dr. Courtney Howard and Dr. Nick Watts have the insiders’ perspective on what this commitment means for Canada. Dr. Howard was instrumental in the movement to encourage Canada to sign on to the Health Programme and will speak to the significance of this milestone, how we got here, and what comes next for Canada. As the Chief Sustainability Officer of the National Health Service (NHS) England, the first health service in the world to commit to reaching net zero, Dr. Watts has first-hand experience with what it means to meet sustainability commitments through system-wide change. Join us as we start to explore what it will take for Canada to translate this commitment into on-the-ground transformation.

This event is the first of three webinars exploring the implications of the federal government’s recent commitment to the COP26 Health Programme.

Speakers:

Dr Courtney Howard

Dr Courtney Howard is a nationally and globally recognized leader on the impacts of climate change on human and planetary health. She has advanced policy and advocacy on active transport, ecoanxiety, movement-building, plant-rich diets, fossil fuel divestment, carbon pricing, coal phase-out, hydraulic fracturing, and integrating health impact assessments into environmental assessments. She led the 2017-2019 Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change Briefings for Canadian Policymakers and was the 2018 International Policy Director for the Lancet Countdown.

Dr Howard sits on the boards of the Canadian Medical Association, Health in Harmony, the Global Climate and Health Alliance, as well as the Steering Committee of the Planetary Health Alliance, and the Editorial Advisory Board of the Lancet Planetary Health. As Co-chair of the advocacy subcommittee of the WHO-Civil Society Working Group on Climate Change and Health, she helped launch a call for G20 leaders to target a #Healthy Recovery initiative which gained the support of two thirds of the world's healthcare professionals.

Dr Howard is a part time emergency physician who lives and plays with her family in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, traditional homeland of the Yellowknife Dene Nation in Canada’s subarctic.

Dr. Nick Watts

Dr Watts is the Chief Sustainability Officer of the NHS, responsible for its commitment to deliver a world-class net zero emission health service. Based in London, he leads the Greener NHS team across the country, which focuses on improving the health of patients and the public through a robust and accelerated response to climate change and the broader sustainability agenda.

Nick is a medical doctor licensed in Australia and the UK, and has trained population health and public policy. He is a Member by Distinction of the Royal College of Physicians’ Faculty of Public Health, and an Honorary Associate Professor of University College London’s Institute for Global Health.

Prior to the National Health Service, Nick worked internationally as the Executive Director of the Lancet Countdown and the Lancet Commission on Health and Climate Change, a collaboration of UN agencies and academic centres across the world. He has also focused on engaging the health profession on the links between public health and climate change, having founded both the Global Climate and Health Alliance and the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change.
