Incidence, location, wildlife reservoir species and biogeographical modeling of leptospirosis in the Canadian Maritimes

In this IDCC Webinar Series presentation, Dr. Vett Lloyd and Samantha Bishop of Mount Allison University will review the research they are undertaking to assess the prevalence of leptospirosis in New Brunswick. Leptospirosis is a serious disease that is spread from exposure to water or soil contaminated by urine from infected wildlife and domestic animals. Many of these reservoir animals are expanding their traditional habitats under the influence of climate change. The presentation will describe the distribution of leptospires across the province and the necessity of continuous monitoring to protect the wellbeing of humans, companion, agricultural and wild animals.

Dans cette présentation, qui fait partie de notre série de webinaires sur les maladies infectieuses liées aux changements climatiques, la P^re Vett Lloyd et Samantha Bishop de l’Université Mount Allison décriront leur étude sur la prévalence de la leptospirose au Nouveau-Brunswick. La leptospirose est une maladie grave propagée par l’exposition à de l’eau ou des sols contaminés par l’urine d’espèces sauvages et d’animaux domestiques infectés. Beaucoup de ces animaux réservoirs élargissent leurs habitats traditionnels sous l’emprise des changements climatiques. La présentation portera sur la répartition des leptospires dans la province et la nécessité d’en assurer la surveillance continue pour protéger le bien-être des humains, des animaux de compagnie, des animaux d’élevage et des espèces sauvages.
