Health Promotion During a Crisis

Learning Objectives

Public Health & Housing

  • Explore changes in the of ratio of government spending on social and education services relative to spending on medical care (the SE/M ratio), and examine what those changes mean for government commitments to wellbeing, health promotion, and illness treatment.
  • Learn why this ratio is an important key performance indicator for evaluating governments’ commitments to health in all policies.

Housing, Climate Change & Health 

  • Understand the various dimensions of housing that influence health

  • Examine energy precarity, i.e. when essential energy services in the home cannot be attained, as a determinant of health

  • Discuss the intersection between housing, climate change, and health

Health Promotion During a Crisis

  • Foster collaborative dialogue through small group discussions to generate actionable insights in supporting community resilience and applying health promotion principles during a crisis.

The PHPC Research, Education & Practice (REP) Rounds is a self-approved group learning activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

After this session participants will be able to:

  • Identify and discuss current and emerging public health issues from a public health physician perspective.
  • Explore the role of public health physicians in implementing innovative approaches in response to these issues.
  • Identify key resources for future reference and continued learning.
