OMATalks: COVID-19 Impact on Mental Health: What We Need to Do Now

The pandemic has taken its toll on peoples’ mental health. As we look forward, it is imperative that we continue to focus on mental health. Earlier this year, the OMA released a white paper, Responding to a Mental Health and Addiction Tsunamithat includes 20 recommendations and calls to action to address the significant gaps in mental health and addiction care.

Canadian broadcaster Valerie Pringle will host a conversation with expert panellists discussing what we must do to address the impact of COVID-19 on Ontarians’ mental health.

Speakers confirmed include:

  • Dr. Sharon Burey, a behavioural pediatrician
  • Dr. Robbie Campbell, a psychiatrist and founder and president of the Eating Disorders Foundation of Canada
  • Dr. Hugh Boyd, a long-term care physician and chair of the OMA Section on Long-Term Care/Care of the Elderly
  • Dr. Sarita Verma, the dean, president and CEO of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine
  • Dr. Vicky Stergiopoulos, physician in chief at the Centre for Addition and Mental Health
  • Dr. Yusra Ahmad, a community and academic psychiatrist

The event is open to all Ontario doctors and health-care stakeholders, all levels of government and the media. The format for the event will be a panel discussion followed by a question-and-answer session.

This panel is the latest OMATalks event, a thought leadership initiative the OMA launched in 2019 to promote discussion of key health-care issues and continue leading the way as Ontario transforms its health care. This is the OMA’s fourth OMATalks.
