PHO: Learning Exchange - Risk of Novel Synthetic Opioids in Ontario

Learning Exchange: Risk of Novel Synthetic Opioids in Ontario

To support responses to reduce opioid-related deaths in Ontario, Public Health Ontario (PHO) is organizing a learning exchange on the risk of novel synthetic opioids. This session will include updates on recent testing information from drug samples and opioid-related deaths followed by a discussion on gathering and interpreting available information to inform responses to reduce substance-related harms.

Participants will be invited to ask questions and share their own updates, challenges and approaches. Participants will have the opportunity to submit questions for the presenters during registration as well. The aim of this session is to highlight experiences of diverse health organizations across the province and to support discussion and knowledge exchange on novel synthetic opioids in Ontario.

Note: This session will be recorded for ongoing training and educational purposes.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to: 

  •  Understand the risks with novel synthetic opioids
  • Identify best practices in overdose responses
  • Describe opportunities for multi-stakeholder responses to overdoses

  • Regan Murray, MPH is an Epidemiologist - Public Health Officer at the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario
  • Karen McDonald, MPPAL is the Lead for Toronto’s Drug Checking Services (Centre on Drug Policy Evaluation, St. Michael’s Hospital)
  • Jennifer Levy, PHD is a Health Policy Specialist at Toronto Public Health
  • Nick Boyce is the Director of Ontario Harm Reduction Network
  • Muhaari A, MPH is the Director of Health Promotion at Black Coalition for AIDS Prevention
  • Ashely Smoke is a member of the Ontario Network of People who use Drugs
