As part of its advocacy for a stronger health-care system, the OMA recently released a plan containing 87 recommendations to address the most pressing health-care challenges across the province, Prescription for Ontario:  Doctors’ 5-Point Plan for Better Health Care.  Informed by feedback from more than 110 health-care stakeholders, 1600 doctors and almost 8000 Ontarians, the plan identifies five priority areas: reducing wait times and the backlog of services, expanding mental health and addiction services in the community, improving home and other community care, strengthening public health and pandemic preparedness, and giving every patient a team of health-care providers and linking them digitally.  The plan also offers solutions for addressing the unique health-care challenges in northern Ontario.

The pandemic proved the inextricable link between a strong health-care system and a strong economy.  The anchor and senior editor of TVO’s The Agenda, Steve Paikin will host a distinguished panel of experts who will discuss how a strong health-care system is fundamental to a strong economic recovery.

Speakers include:

  • Janet EckerMember of the Board of Directors, Canadian Medical Association and former minister of community and social services, education and finance. Received the order of Canada for her public service contributions.
  • Deb Matthews, member of the Board of the University Health Network Foundation, former minister of health and long-term care, children and youth services, advanced education and skills development, former president of the treasury board and was the 10th deputy premier of Ontario.
  • Frances LankinCanadian Senator, former president and CEO or United Way Toronto, former health minister. Member of Queen’s Privy Council and recipient of the Order of Canada.

The event is open to all Ontario doctors and health-care stakeholders, all levels of government and the media. The format for the event will be a panel discussion followed by a question-and-answer session.

This panel is the latest OMATalks event, a thought leadership initiative the OMA launched in 2019 to promote discussion of key health-care issues as doctors continue to lead the way to better health. This is the OMA’s fifth OMATalks.
