PHO Microbiology Rounds: COVID-19 Vaccination in Dialysis Patients

Dialysis patients are an at-risk population for severe COVID-19. This presentation will provide background on the impact of COVID-19 on patients on dialysis, including COVID-19 outbreaks in dialysis units. Recent serologic studies on vaccine immunogenicity will be presented, as well as a discussion on how this may be considered in the context of vaccine effectiveness and booster doses for this vulnerable population.

Intended audience: Public Health Microbiologists and those interested in COVID-19 vaccine immunogenicity in special populations

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize the impact of COVID-19 on dialysis patients
  2. Describe the serologic response to COVID-19 vaccination in the dialysis population
  3. Identify the method used to assess the COVID-19 post-vaccination antibody response
  4. Examine how these data can be used in conjunction with vaccine effectiveness to inform booster doses in the dialysis population
