NCCDH: Equitable and age-friendly communities

  • 22 Feb 2022
  • 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
  • Webinar

This event will take place in English, with closed-captioning in English and simultaneous French interpretation.

This webinar is part of a series co-developed by the National Collaborating Centre for Determinants of Health (NCCDH) and Health Promotion Canada (HPC) based on content from the book entitled “Promoting the Health of Older Adults: the Canadian Experience” (PHOA).

This second webinar in the series will explore the opportunities and challenges to creating supportive environments that promote health and equity for older Canadians. Speakers will discuss research efforts and policy developments to support the health of older adults, with attention to age-friendly programs and environments as a way to promote the health and quality of life of older adults.

Participants will learn about:

  • how supportive environments underlie health equity and the social determinants of health for older adults;
  • features of age-friendly communities and the challenge of inequities in age-friendly initiatives;
  • factors that influence the age-friendliness of communities and their capacity to become more equitable;
  • the importance of housing for older adults, including difficulties faced by smaller cities and communities to achieve age-friendly housing; and
  • examples of policies and programs that address key components of supportive and equitable age-friendly environments (housing and social support)

This webinar will be of interest to practitioners, educators, policymakers, academics, researchers and organizations working in aging.

It will also benefit advocates for older persons in health promotion, public health, gerontology and community development, as well as in related fields such as nursing and social work.
