Food for thought: Contextualizing Food Insecurity on Adverse Mental Health Outcomes for Youth & Caregivers

  • Webinar

There is a clear connection between food insecurity and adverse mental health outcomes. We also know that food insecurity is a stressful experience that is compounded by feelings of shame, hopelessness, and alienation— all of which can trigger new or exacerbate existing mental health struggles for both youth and caregivers. Furthermore, concepts of ‘good food’ and cultural values attached to eating can further distort one’s relationship with food, intensifying feelings of shame, and provoking disordered eating for food insecure individuals.

In this Frayme hosted webinar, Roots to Harvest and Choices For Youth will be examining what food insecurity looks like in Canada, exploring the different factors that increase the risk of experiencing food insecurity, addressing adverse mental health outcomes connected to food insecurity, and discussing their own initiatives that approach the issue from a holistic, intersectional lens.

Learning objectives:
Participants in this webinar will:
1. Hear an introduction on the connection between food insecurity and adverse mental health outcomes.
2. Listen to discussions on the importance of human connection in addressing food insecurity.
3. Learn about the social barriers and gaps in services that increase the risk of experiencing food insecurity.
4. Discover the ways in which trauma-informed, intersectional approaches in social services can help decrease shame associated with food insecurity and support solution-based, housing-first programming.
