PHO Webinar: Promoting Health: A (re)introduction to health promotion

Many health promoters in Ontario have spent the COVID-19 pandemic reassigned to the pandemic response, away from health promotion work. In light of this, Public Health Ontario (PHO) is hosting a three-part webinar series that aims to re-familiarize health promoters with key concepts in health promotion. The series will also benefit professionals in public health and community health who wish to learn more about health promotion.

In the first session of the series, Andrea Bodkin, Senior Program Specialist at PHO, will present core concepts related to health promotion: what health is, what health promotion is, and how the Ottawa Charter is relevant 35 years after its inception. Following this, Julie Slack, Manager (Acting) of Chronic Disease Prevention will discuss how health promotion is practiced at Northwestern Health Unit.

Intended audience: Health promoters working at public health units, community health centres, and NGOs in Ontario. Managers and directors at similar organizations, as well as public health/health promotion students, are a secondary audience.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Define health and health promotion.
  2. Summarize key historical developments and the evolution of health promotion.
  3. Describe the current role of health promotion within the field of public health.

Presenter(s): Andrea Bodkin and Julie Slack

Andrea Bodkin, MPH, has worked in health promotion and public health since 2003. As Senior Program Specialist in Health Promotion with Public Health Ontario, Andrea brings her enthusiasm and expertise for planning in all forms, evaluation, community engagement, partnership development and facilitation to public health units across Ontario. Andrea holds a Master’s degree in Public Health with a specialty in Health Promotion from Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia.

Julie Slack, MSc, RD, is currently Acting Manager, Chronic Disease Prevention with the Northwestern Health Unit. Previously, she worked as a registered dietitian and Public Health Nutritionist on the team for fourteen years. After a few years of working in the dietetic field, Julie completed her master’s degree at the University of Alberta. When Julie is not working or volunteering, she can be found with her 11 year old daughter, husband and dog enjoying the great northern outdoors either running, biking, skiing, snowmobiling or boating.
