What will be discussed?

In 2021, Cheryl Koehn and Dr. Terri-Lynn Fox came together as Indigenous Scholar, settler/colonial and persons living with rheumatoid arthritis to walk together on a path forward towards Truth and Reconciliation. Speakers will discuss how an Indigenous-led initiative, the Arthritis Learning Circle, has developed into several community-driven research projects. The webinar will also touch on deliberate and meaningful design that upholds reciprocity, accountability, and transparency throughout different phases of research.

After this webinar, the audience will be able to:

Describe how an Indigenous-led initiative formed on Turtle Island-Canada is leading community-driven action.
Discuss approaches to uphold reciprocity, accountability, and transparency at each stage of community-driven action.

Speakers:

Cheryl Koehn has lived with rheumatoid arthritis for 32 years and has become a national patient community leader, educator, patient research partner and published author. Ms. Koehn has dedicated her life to helping others living with arthritis. She is the founder and president of Arthritis Consumer Experts, Canada’s first national, patient-led organization that provides science-based information and education programs in both official languages to people with arthritis. Ms. Koehn represents ACE by providing our members’ perspectives on arthritis health and policy issues to governments, private payers, employers, healthcare professionals, and media. She is a frequently invited speaker at national and international arthritis and health-related conferences and an active patient research partner participating in numerous current research projects in Canada and international. Currently she serves as the patient representative on the CIHR Standing Committee on Ethics. Dr. Terri-Lynn Fox is from the Blood Tribe, within the Blackfoot Confederacy, and practices her Siksikaitsitapi ways. Dr. Fox has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology; a master’s degree in Sociology; and a doctoral degree in Education. Her dissertation topic was "Indian Residential Schools: Perspectives of Blackfoot Confederacy People" on her research about the experiences of Survivors from the Blackfoot Confederacy from six Indian Residential Schools. Dr. Fox is both directly and indirectly affected by Indian Residential Schools. She is the daughter of two Survivors of an Indian Residential School and is a survivor of Indian Day Schools, herself. She is blessed with four children and six grandchildren.
