Modern astronomy contends with complex physics, complex technology, and complex data; the result is an abundance of complex statistical challenges. This talk will focus on how new research in the exciting interdisciplinary research field of astrostatistics is advancing both astronomy and statistics, with applications in such diverse areas as:
Dr. David Stenning is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at Simon Fraser University’s Faculty of Science. His research interests focus on statistical methods for the physical sciences, specifically astronomy and astrophysics. On the statistics side, Dr. Stenning utilizes complex computer simulations of astrophysical phenomena and modern machine learning and data science techniques to tackle challenging scientific problems.
