West Nile virus was introduced to North America in 1999. Since that time, it has caused >2000 human deaths, millions of avian deaths, and economic damage to livestock. West Nile virus is predicted to shift northward due to climate change. Here, Alexander Keyel from the New York State Department of Health will review models of West Nile virus for predictions on different time horizons: short (1-year), intermediate (10-year), and long (end of century). Many models for West Nile virus exist, but further work is needed to develop them on finer spatial and temporal scales and better link them to management decisions to protect the environment and reduce the burden of disease on human health.
