Breaking the silence and circle of violence among the Indigenous Sami

  • Webinar

Join us for a special Waakebiness-Bryce Institute for Indigenous Health International Indigenous Health Research Rounds with Dr. Astrid M.A Eriksen is an Indigenous researcher from Norway. She has an PhD in epidemiology from UiT the Arctic University of Norway. She also has a position as an associate professor at Oslo Metropolitan University. Her research on interpersonal violence among Sami is one of the key factors that has led to a rise in political attentiveness to violence against Sami women in Norway.

The national surveys on violence and rape in Norway do not include the Indigenous population – the Sami. Until 2015 we had no quantitative research on violence among Sami, hence the topic was invisible for national political and health authorities- and unspoken in many Sami communities and among Sami politicians. Many Sami suffered in silence, making it difficult the break the circle of violence. Some of those who had the courage to report the violence to authorities (police, health authorities), claimed that they were ignored. The research findings from the SAMINOR 2 Questionnaire Survey shows high prevalence’s, as well as gender and ethnic differences. This topic will be discussed in a larger colonization context.
