PHO Learning Exchange: Leveraging Technology to Support Population Mental Health: Strategies to incorporate digital tools into mental health practice

This session will provide an overview of the current context of providing mental health support through digital health delivery. The presenters will discuss and introduce population digital mental health tools and how to evaluate and implement digital tools into mental health clinical practice; both through an organizational and individual lens.

Intended audience: Public health staff who work in mental health, substance use and/or addiction, policy makers, researchers, and/or developers of digital health products.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Define digital mental health as it relates to/intersects with public health.
  • Understand the benefits and challenges in accessing or using digital mental health tools/data from a population intervention/surveillance perspective.
  • Strategize methods that support successful use and adoption of digital mental health tools to target/support improvements to population and public health.
  • Apply digital health frameworks, resources and guides into current public health practice.

Presenter(s): Dr. Gillian Strudwick and Iman Kassam

Dr. Gillian Strudwick, RN, PhD, FAMIA, FCAN, is a Registered Nurse, holding the positions of Scientist and Chief Clinical Informatics Officer at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). She is also an Associate Professor at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto, and holds academic appointments at both Western University (Nursing) and the University of Victoria (Health Information Science). In 2020, Dr. Strudwick became the first woman in Canada to become a Fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association and was recognized by Digital Health Canada as a top Women Leader in Digital Health.

Iman Kassam, MHI, is a Project and Research Coordinator in the Digital Mental Health Research Lab at CAMH. She is an Adjunct Lecturer at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. She is also the Communications Coordinator for the Ontario Nursing Informatics Group. She supports digital mental health research in the areas of population mental health, privacy, trust and consent, implementation sciences, and community/patient engagement.
