The Provincial Support System Program (PSSP) invites you to join us on Monday, March 13, for a two-part special event that engages the expertise of diverse, multi-professional speakers working as clinician scholars, educators, and community leaders across healthcare and health professions education.
The speakers will share fresh perspectives and expertise about the surprising and unrecognized ways in which discrimination and bias present across the clinical care landscape. Participants will have the opportunity to take a new look at long-standing issues. They will learn from and engage in dialogue about how clinicians can work to provide affirming, inclusive, culturally relevant, and anti-racist care.
Part 1: Keynote: Towards a language of racial health equity | 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. EDT Description: This keynote explores the iatrogenic impacts of aversive racism in mental health care and the ways in which language plays a significant role in perpetuating racial health inequities. Keynote: Dr. Carmen Black, Assistant Professor, Yale University, and Psychiatrist, Yale Mental Health Centre
Part 2: Panel discussion: Disrupting racism in clinical practice and creating spaces to heal | 3:15 - 4:30 p.m. EDT Description: This panel explores anti-racism in clinical care, including the ways in which bias and discrimination negatively affect access to and experiences of mental health care for racialized people. Each panelist will provide brief opening remarks and then engage in a moderated discussion where they will share their thoughts, respond to questions, and engage in dialogue on how clinicians can best provide affirming, inclusive, culturally relevant and anti-racist care.
Panel:
This event is for both clinicians and those working closely with clinicians across the mental health and substance use landscape. There is no cost to attend this event. However, in order to create an optimum environment for sharing and mobilizing knowledge, space is limited, and registration is mandatory. We will maintain dedicated spaces for clinicians working on issues related to early psychosis and schizophrenia. Please indicate whether this pertains to you when you register.
