PHO Grand Rounds: Evidence, values, and ideology in public health decision-making: The debate over supervised injection facilities

  • 26 Nov 2013
  • 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
  • 480 University Ave, Suite 300, Toronto, ON, Boardroom 350

Supervised injection services in Toronto have been promoted by academic studies, public health officials, and the Board of Health. However, legal and financial barriers are significant and key decision-makers are opposed. While evidence-based policy is promoted, there is no consensus about what to do when evidence and values clash. In this presentation, Dr. Ahmed Bayoumi will review the evidence for supervised injection services, explore the values behind opposing viewpoints, and discuss how each viewpoint uses evidence to bolster its arguments. He will also explore how perspectives differ among stakeholders (academics, public health practitioners, community members, and decision-makers).
Presenter: Dr. Ahmed Bayoumi

Dr. Ahmed Bayoumi is a scientist at the Centre for Research on Inner City Health and a general internist and HIV physician at St. Michael's Hospital. He is an associate professor of medicine in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Bayoumi and Dr. Carol Strike were the co-principal investigators of the Toronto and Ottawa Supervised Consumption Assessment (TOSCA) study.
