PHO Rounds: Understanding Male-to-Female Sexual Harassment and Aggression in Public Drinking Settings

This presentation describes male-to-female sexual harassment and aggression that takes place in Ontario public drinking settings, with a focus on the role of alcohol and men’s normative attitudes and belief in the acceptability of sexual aggression in those settings. Data collected over the past 10 years is described, including a study conducted in 2012 on young adult drinkers in a bar district in a city in Southwestern Ontario, as well as results from qualitative focus group discussions with young adult men conducted in the last three years.  Implications will be discussed in terms of how to prevent sexual aggression in bars and clubs.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Summarize the extent and impact of alcohol-related sexual harassment and aggression in public drinking settings (prior to the pandemic)
  2. Explain the role that alcohol plays in addition to the roles of normative attitudes and beliefs, in public drinking settings
  3. Discuss prevention and policy options to prevent and respond to alcohol-related sexual harassment and aggression in public drinking settings
