PHO Rounds: Monitoring Population-Level Children’s Developmental Health at School Entry: Early Development Instrument in Ontario and Beyond

Dr. Magdalena Janus, Professor at McMaster University and Co-Developer of the Early Development Instrument (EDI) will describe the importance of measuring and monitoring early childhood development at a population level. A description of the EDI, its history, purpose, logistics and outcomes will be reviewed in order to set the foundation of understanding of the use of EDI data as a surveillance measure in the context of social determinants of health. Finally, the session will explore the potential of the EDI data utility to inform both the Ontario and Canadian discourse on the impact of the pandemic on early child development.  https://edi.offordcentre.com/

Intended Audience
Public health practitioners (nurses, health promoters, physicians, epidemiologists), policy-makers, academics, and community partners in child and youth services

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Develop a general understanding of the EDI, how and where data are collected and the outcomes
2. Gain knowledge on the depth of the EDI program of research, relevance as a social determinant of health, contribution to population level data, and its limitation
3. Understand the utility of the EDI, its applicability in informing health decisions and policies in the Ontario and Canadian context

Presenter(s): Dr. Magdalena Janus

Magdalena Janus, PhD, is a Professor at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences and Offord Centre for Child Studies at McMaster University, and an affiliate Professor at the School of Population and Public Health at the University of British Columbia. She is a co-author, with the late Dr. Dan Offord, of the Early Development Instrument (EDI), a measure of children's developmental health at school entry. Her research interests include early development of children with and without developmental challenges, social determinants of children’s health, and global indicators of child development.
