PHO Rounds: Nail Salon Workers Project at Parkdale Queen West Community Health Center (CHC): An example of community-driven public health
In 2013, the Nail Salon Workers Project was initiated at the Parkdale Queen West Community Health Centre with the goal of improving health outcomes and working conditions of nail salon workers. The Nail Salon Workers Project has supported the development of a Nail Technicians Network in Toronto as well as a grassroots.
Healthy Nail Salon Coalition that includes settlement organizations, legal clinics, community health centres, researchers, and occupational health and safety organizations. Over the last decade, several research and community projects have been supported, including a pilot project using social media to share video messages about occupational health and safety for nail salon workers.
This Public Health Ontario (PHO) Rounds describes the progression of the project, illustrating how the CHC model has been leveraged to support public and occupational health through programs and academic partnerships.
Intended audience: Public Health Inspectors, Health Promoters, Occupational Health professionals, Public Health managers
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Recall hazards and health risks that nail salon technicians face at work
- Discuss challenges faced when working to increase awareness among nail salon owners and technicians
- Describe the range and scope of work supported by the Nail Salon Workers Project at the Parkdale Queen West Community Health Centre
- Identify examples where Community Health Centers support public and occupational health through their programs

Victoria Arrandale is an Assistant Professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.
